In the 1800's, freight trains would deliver items to warehouses in the lower west side of Manhattan in Chelsea. The street where these freight trains travelled became known as "death avenue" as numerous deaths occurred from accidents in the streets involving the freight trains. In 1929, it was decided that an above ground, second story level, railroad would be built to prevent these accidents from occurring. This second story railroad ran from 1929 until 1980 when a freight train completed its' last delivery of frozen turkey's. Since that time there was discussion of destroying the railroad but in 1999 a community group formed and began advocating that a park be built instead. In June 2009, this second story park was opened to the public.
This park is now known as The High Line.
Buildings that can be seen while walking along The High Line.
A view of the street from The High Line.
Check out the architecture of the building to the very left.
A view of the water & Jersey from The High Line.
The scenery looks quite industrial, but very chic and trendy at the same time.
Remnants of the old railroad.
As you are walking along the park, you can still see parts of the old railway.
They are still in the process of building 2 additional sections of the park. The landscaping was so beautiful!

Christy, these pictures are gorgeous! Do you have a really nice camera? If so, what kind? You make city life look so appealing. :)
Thanks! Jace is definitely the photographer in our family and he has a Cannon Rebel EOS- I believe it is the same one that Lindsey has.
Great pictures. Keep the history fun facts coming too -- that was very interesting. Props to the community group that pushed for the park.
